Microsoft Exchange Server Cyber Attack

In case you have missed it, hundreds of thousands of Microsoft Exchange Server systems are thought to have been compromised in a global cyber-attack by hackers, who exploited zero-day vulnerabilities to pilfer emails.

The European Banking Authority is also among the victims.

At first, the attack seemed to target organizations specifically, but its level has broadened and escalated phenomenally now.

Consequently, there is a chance that many small businesses, corporate, and government organizations who have fallen victim to the attack are still unaware of the situation.

If you are using Microsoft Exchange System, have you been compromised? The first thing you need to ask yourself is which flavor of Microsoft Exchange your company is using.

The vulnerabilities are found in the on-premises editions of Microsoft Exchange Server, but are not present in the cloud-based Exchange Online or Microsoft 365 (formerly O365) email services.

If you suspect you may have been compromised, Microsoft has released an updated script that checks Exchange log files for indicators of compromise associated with the vulnerabilities disclosed on March 2, 2021.

In the unfortunate event that you have fallen a victim to that attack, Microsoft has already released security patches last week and suggested that vulnerable organizations should apply them as a matter of urgency. For those which cannot immediately patch, Microsoft has suggested some alternative mitigations.
