Security experts are warning about a new malware called ‘Erbium’ that is spreading rapidly. The malware has dangerous capabilities and allows cybercriminals to steal personal information of victims including credit card details.
A report by cybersecurity company Cyfirma last week said the malware is distributed online in the form of cracked software and hacks for popular video games.
The report said, “Info stealer malware developers sell these types of malware in underground forums and sell the harvest details in underground forums as well as criminal marketplaces.”
The malware is being sold as a subscription online for $100 a month.
It is not clear how many people have been affected by the malware so far but the kind of capabilities it has, it is regarded as a very dangerous malware. Some of these include access to all the drives attached to a system and initializing the required ones for the malware to function, loading other libraries and processes in the memory, collecting system information, network connection capability, collecting user information such as passwords from a wide range of popular chat and email clients and browsers etc.
Users are advised to stay clear of pirated software and games, and to run regular anti-malware scans of their devices.
